What is quilting? Quilting is a form of stitching that will and does hold together all the layers of a quilt. It also makes a pretty decorative design on the quilt. To do the quilting you can do it by hand or by using a machine. If you do hand quilting you will use a quilting loop or a quilting frame and needles that are made just for the purpose of quilting which are called betweens and you will use quilting thread. The stitches in the quilt are made by using your hands with one hand and you will keep your other hand on the underneath part of the quilt as a way to feel the needle.
Quilting requires one to make small and uniform running stitches and the stitches should be straight and small. One’s who make these quilts have a language all their own. Even the word quilt can mean different things. It can mean a quilt which is made up of three layers. The art of quilting has been around for many centuries and it was formed as a way to help people to be able to stay warm during the winter. Then, in the United States, women began to make patchwork quilts and used smaller pattern materials to do this.
Normally for one to make a quilt it will be done in three different layers with the top layer being a top fabric. The middle layer will be a layer of batting for insulation and the third layer will be a backing material. The thread of the quilt will go through all three layers of the quilt and it will cover the entire area of the quilt.
