A number of things inspire folks to start quilting. In constant view, draped over a chair, is the old quilt completely hand worked by Grandmother. A recent visit to a quilt shop has left you in awe, excited and eager to test your skills and creativity. Finished quilts at the craft shop or sewing center have fueled your desire to get going. If you are already a passionate and accomplished sewer, some of the basic tools may be among your supplies on hand. There is a vast array of implements and convenience items on the market.
Some are necessary and invaluable while others are just nice to have. Some must-have items for the quilter are a rotary cutter, rotary mat, rotary ruler, sewing machine, iron, ironing board, fabric scissors, paper scissors, straight pins, safety pins, needles for hand stitching and needles for the sewing machine, seam ripper, design wall, cotton thread and, of course, cotton fabric. Other fabrics, such as silk, velvet, and others should be left to the more experienced quilter.
To maximize your quilting efficiency and enjoyment, organization is essential. A dedicated space (room or just a corner of a room) will allow you to avoid setting up and tearing down every time you work on a project. There is a product on the market called “Fabric Holder” by Ackfeld to contain your fabrics. Plastic storage boxes, ribbon organizers, sewing boxes and thread holders will keep things handy and tidy. Quilting totes are great for the quilter on the go.
