Various Types of Quilting

Quilting is a process of sewing three layers of material together. The top fabric, batting or insulation, and backing all are joined by hand sewing or using a sewing machine. This art has been around since the 1600's and quilts are still crafted today using the same methods. In the early 1600's the women of Wales gathered scraps of fabric to piece together their quilts. They used lambs wool or old worn out blankets for the batting.

The vivid colors and beautiful patterns they designed made these quilts works of art. The quilts were used for the family bed covers, and also wedding quilts. The Welsh style of quilting is still practiced today. Quilting can be done by a sewing machine or by hand sewing. Running stitches are thought to be the best stitch to use, and the strongest. Frames or hooks are used for holding the pieces off the lap of the quilter. Machine stitching is widely practiced, but the layers still need to be basted together for stability before placing the quilt on the machine.

Designing your own quilt can be fun and rewarding. There are many patterns to choose from like patchwork, cathedral, Amish pattern, and wedding ring. Crafting a quilt is a time consuming hobby, but not that difficult. It is definitely a hands on experience, and the end result is a beautiful work of art that can be handed down in your family.
The art of quilting has been around for many centuries. It is even thought that the ancient Egyptians might have quilted.
